Our Mission is to bring together a New York City Painter and an African Lion Whisperer in a community-based project showing how art can make a difference; across borders and cultures, to help save the rapidly disappearing African lions.
This is an unconventional collaboration between painter Suzanne Unrein, and Lion Whisperer Kevin Richardson. In October of 2013, Suzanne traveled to South Africa where she documented the unique bond between Kevin and the lions, hyenas and leopards on his reserve. Back in New York City, she is working on paintings informed by the sketches, photographs and her experience. The sale of paintings will help to ensure the preservation of lion populations.
As 2014 comes to a close, here's the latest!
The paintings and oil on paper pieces are nearly completed and we are onto the next phase of planning for the exhibit! We will be meeting with my NYC gallery, Rare, at the beginning of January, to make plans for the exhibit in New York, Los Angeles and/or Miami, slated for May of 2015. Additionally, we will be working on sponsorships and partnerships and should have more details for you in the coming months. All in all, we are very excited to gear up for 2015, both to raise money for Kevin's reserve and to bring further awareness to the declining numbers of African lions.
Inside the Artist Studio
“Of all the contemporary painters I have come across in over 15 years of being a gallerist, I have encountered no one who depicts movement or motion on canvas better than she. Her work is consistently brilliant and thought-provoking.” -- Pete Surace, Owner of RARE Gallery, NYC
Out of Africa with Kevin
The Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary’s mission is to provide a self-sustaining African carnivore sanctuary for the purposes of wild species preservation through education, awareness and funding, especially pertaining to the rapid decline of large carnivores in Africa due to habitat loss, human-predator conflict, unscrupulous hunting, disease and their illegal trade.
